A FUNNY THING HAPPENED...
Thoughts on
BUSINESS AND values
The essence
of our business’ character can be captured in a set of values. They are
courage, respect and excitement. Without these values, the face of our
business would be nondescript. Our values are not slanted to any
religious or spiritual idea. Instead, they are principles, intertwined
to produce a strong decision-making platform from which all of our
directives flow.
Wow, heavy
stuff, right? Not really. Thousands of businesses are values driven.
Being a values driven business is simply a wise choice.
Do you know
what values your business follows? It doesn’t take a lot of work to
figure it out. In fact, there are dozens of books and papers out there
just waiting for you. Google it, see what pops up. I recently took the
old-fashioned route and read Managing by Values (Ken Blanchard
and Michael O’Connor); a story-telling approach to a business
discovering the roles values must play in its future. With
companies failing and partnerships dissolving at astronomical rates,
knowing the principles or values in which you believe, will certainly
help lead you down a path that’s marked with more successes than
failures.
Family values
are probably more common than business values, right? This, hopefully,
will change. Globalization’s momentum will not be slowing any time
soon. Other economic forces are continuing to produce business
decision-making scenarios that are more complex than ever before (for
businesses of all sizes). Values are not going to knock down obstacles
and make it easy for you. But they will be a tremendous aid when it
comes to knowing what matters most when you want your business to be
great.
Rather than
trying to be a values prophet, I’d rather describe the values
that define our business. Think about what we’re articulating. Perhaps
it will trigger something within you.
Courage
We started
our business during one of the worst economic times imaginable and in a
market teeming with advertising agencies, freelancers and consultants.
The courageous step of departing from our full-time jobs and taking on
numerous clients has set the tone for our business. It was and is
terrifying, but at the same time, it is unimaginably rewarding.
Going
forward, the same courage mustered to get started will work in our favor
as we continue to attract new clients and extend our reach locally and
nationally. Courage allows us to try new techniques and establish new
relationships. The payoff is of course plenty of “good ink” for our
clients. We’re also providing strategic approaches that connect our
clients with new customers and other target audiences. There is no end
to the possibility.
Respect
We respect
each other, our clients and all members of the media; simply put, we
respect everyone touched by our business. Our philosophy for respect is
simple: Our clients deserve our best work. We value the time that the
media freely gives us. Our success is dependent upon the respect we give
others and the respect others have for our business. We are not running
a hobby business. We are professionals delivering real value to whomever
we serve.
Excitement
If we don’t
feel that our clients are enthusiastic believers in their products or
services, our efforts are doomed from the onset. At gBritt, we're
passionate people. Our clients and partners feel it when they work with
us. It's visible in the results delivered with every project and task we
execute.
If we don’t
convey enthusiasm for our clients, there is little chance for success.
It all comes down to this: We will not work with anyone who is
dispassionate. Excitement and success go hand-in-hand.
By using the
values of courage, integrity and excitement, we have formed the
following vision statement for our business:
When we
improve the business results of our clients, we strengthen our own
business.
By
continually satisfying client desires and our own needs, we shape and
strengthen our core.
Without
our core, we do not have the ability to make a difference.
Values
clearly play an important role in everything we do at gBritt. Values
have long-been part of all of our home lives. Maybe it’s time they find
their way into more business environments. Are they part of yours? We
would love to hear from you. Maybe there’s something that we can learn
from your experiences.
Thank you for
reading!
